How to Split and Clean Double-Glazed Oven Door Glass

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate

Time Required: 30–45 minutes

Estimated Cost: £2–£5

Even if you scrub the outside and inside of your oven regularly, brown grease drips and foggy streaks inevitably run down between the two sheets of glass. Because this baked-on residue sits inside the sealed door frame, normal surface wipes and sprays can never reach it. During property handovers or routine deep cleans, a dirty oven glass unit is an immediate red flag.

Most standard UK ovens—including models by Beko, Bosch, Hotpoint, and Zanussi—are engineered with a simple quick-release mechanism specifically so the inner glass can be removed for cleaning. You do not need to unscrew the entire door from the chassis.

Tools & Materials Checklist

Tools

  • Flathead Screwdriver or Torx Driver (T20) (depends on brand; many newer models simply clip off without tools)
  • Thick Bath Towel or Blanket (to lay the removed glass on safely)
  • Soft Microfibre Cloths
  • Non-Scratch Scouring Sponge

Materials

  • Oven Cleaning Paste (e.g., Astonish The Miracle Oven & Cookware Cleaner or The Pink Stuff)
  • Warm Water
  • Glass Cleaner Spray or Diluted White Vinegar (for the final streak-free polish)

DIY Warning: Oven door panels are made from tempered glass. It is tough against heat, but the edges and corners are brittle. Never rest glass directly on hard tile or stone worktops; always place it flat onto a folded towel, and do not use metal scrapers or wire scourers that can scratch or weaken the surface.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Ensure the Oven is Completely Cold

Never attempt to remove or clean oven glass while the appliance is warm. Thermal shock from cool cleaning pastes or water can shatter tempered glass instantly.

Step 2: Open the Door and Locate the Retaining Trim

  1. Open the oven door fully to a horizontal position.
  2. Inspect the top plastic or metal strip (the ventilation trim along the top edge of the door).
  3. Identify the release mechanism:
    • Clip System (Common on Beko, Bosch, Neff): Look for small push-tabs on the left and right sides of the top trim. Press both tabs inward simultaneously to unclick the trim.
    • Screw System (Common on older Hotpoint, Indesit): Locate the two screws securing the top corners. Undo them using your screwdriver and set them aside safely.
  4. Lift the top plastic retaining bar free from the door frame.

Step 3: Slide Out the Inner Glass Pane

  1. Lay your folded bath towel on a nearby table or floor.
  2. With the top trim removed, grip the exposed top edge of the inner glass panel with both hands.
  3. Gently slide the panel upward at a slight angle until the bottom edge clears the lower support slots.
  4. If your door has triple-glazing, carefully slide out the middle panel in the same way, noting which side faces inward.
  5. Place the glass flat onto your towel.

Step 4: Break Down Baked-On Grease

  1. Dampen your non-scratch sponge with warm water.
  2. Scoop a small amount of Astonish Oven Paste or Pink Stuff onto the sponge.
  3. Work the paste in small circular motions across the brown drips and baked grease lines. The mild mineral abrasives will lift baked polymerised oil without scratching the tempered finish.
  4. Repeat the process on the inside face of the outer door glass that remains attached to the oven frame.
  5. Wipe away all abrasive residue using a clean, damp microfibre cloth.

Step 5: Buff and De-Streak

  1. Spray both glass surfaces with glass cleaner or a splash of white vinegar diluted with water.
  2. Polish thoroughly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth until completely crystal-clear and streak-free.

Step 6: Reinstall the Pane

  1. Pick up the inner glass pane, checking the manufacturer orientation stamp (often printed in a corner, stating “This side facing in” or “Tempered Glass”).
  2. Guide the bottom edge into the lower rubber-lined mounting slots.
  3. Lower the top edge into position against the side cushions.
  4. Snap the top retaining trim back into place until both clips audibly click, or reinstall the retaining screws firmly (do not over-tighten into the plastic housing).
  5. Open and shut the door gently to verify proper seating before using the oven.
